Early Waverly Farm
Preparing soil for first planting, Waverly Farm, September 1996.
First Planting, Waverly Farm, September 1996. The immediately previous planting in this field was alfalfa. Alfalfa, a nitrogen fixing legume with a deep and fibrous root system got us off to a great start without the need to enhance the soil in any way.
This wide spacing scheme was interplanted upon the purchase of our first high density harvest machine, a Holmac, purchased in January 1997.
The groundwork for our drip irrigation system is almost done. If you look carefully, you will see darker patches of earth beneath the black drip tubes—the water has begun flowing on June 13, 1997.
